Breaking into the electric car market has not been easy for Honda. Most, if not all, of their releases have yet to come close to edging out their main competitors Hyundai, Kia, and Toyota. However, the 2019 Honda Insight Hybrid is a game-changer that might finally give Honda a chance to find its place in the growing market.
Designed to look just like a regular sedan, the 2019 Honda will sport a more conventional look compared to its more polarizing cousins. It also comes with an EPA fuel economy rating of mpg in the city, which, according to the Henio Arcangeli, Jr., senior vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc is proof that "the efficiency of a hybrid doesn't mean sacrificing style, refinement, or performance."
Honda's decision to go with a sedan is surprising, to say the least. Not only do they have a reason NOT to go the sedan route with the failure of the Civic Hybrid, but, judging by the current state of the market, sedans are and have been on the decline for quite a while now while SUVs continue to see sales growth year in and year out.
The 2019 Honda Insight will pair a 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle engine, engine motor, and a 60-cell lithium-ion battery back. The two-motor system works to generate 151 horsepower and 197 pound-feet of torque. When relying solely on electric power, the vehicle can drive as far as 1 mile, and although it’s not much, it's still something.
The Insight will also include three different driving modes that drivers can choose from using the steering-wheel-mounted deceleration selectors. This includes Normal, Econ, and Sport.
Honda first discounted the vehicle back in 2014 in an attempt to refocus their hybrid strategy. Four years later, it's back again. Hopefully, this time around, Honda knows what it is doing.
